From vk scans, mostly: The setting is a fantasy version of medieval China, called Saiunkoku or "Land of Many-Colored Clouds." The heroine Shuuri is the daughter of a high-born family that has become poor. She plays the erhu and earns money for the family, but is frustrated by their poverty as well as her limitations to be a scholar because she is a female. One day she is invited to the palace to be a tutor to the new young king. Beautiful young men in elegant robes abound. The female lead is a rare one, beauty and brains who makes greats buns too! She's a kind person that possess a great deal inner virtue, stubbornness, and intelligence. Her trials will be many as she strives for her dreams. Sai Yukino wrote and Kairi Yura illustrated the 12-volume novel series that the anime is taken from. After the novels, Yura also was involved in the release of the manga. To date, 8 tankoubon have been released, with book 5 due in January 2010. Both series are published in Japan by Kadokawa Shoten.
